New Table

I’m so excited about this new table from Restoration Hardware I bought for our house.

I’m currently trying to find chairs like these but a little darker, more of a black than silver….

diningtableWe have a dining room that will be opened up into the kitchen later this year or early next and that will house our more “formal” Crate & Barrel table and West Elm chairs, but we also have a huge Family Room that will fit our large sectional and is just calling for a more casual table for one of the back corners. I envision my family sitting there playing Board Games, coloring and just love that the table can’t really get ruined…it’s meant to look distressed.

I love the metal legs and that it’s on castors so I could easily move it if I needed to.

With two boys (one of which who spills every glass I give him) it’s just perfect b/c you can’t really mess it up.

The legs are so sturdy…

Kirk is going to kill me, but I think I need to order this 1890 Stag Head too….he is just begging to go on the wall in that room.prod1860696

he looks so menacing.

What shall I name him?

For When They Ask Why

I was at Dick’s Sporting Good’s the day before Christmas looking for THE best last minute gift that entered my mind at 2 a.m. while feeding Lowe when I ran into the husband of a friend of a friend.

I smiled and was so nice to him despite being tired and running behind and even though Lowe was Hangry. It’s just what you do, right?

I asked him what he was looking for or who he had left on his list or some generic question like that thinking I’d make polite small talk and then wish him a Merry Christmas and be on my way.

Except, he was kind of a dick!

He’s always been so nice and so it’s quite possible that he was suffering from Last Minute Husband Christmas Stress, I’ll give him that…but it’s not really an excuse.

I quickly realized he wasn’t in the mood for my Holiday Cheer as he NOT ONCE made eye contact and said, “Well, I’m off to find some Carhartt’s for Kirk…we bought a Ranch in Kansas, you know?”

And he said….

“Yeah…Good luck with that…..” followed by a scoff.

Look, I get it people. Colorado is beautiful and we are all proud of our views and skiing and the weather and all, but we have choices in life. That’s the message here I guess. We have choices.

I knew there would be naysayers. I had a friend recently decide to leave the suburbs to move her family to a mountain town for the SAME REASON WE DID and people would ask her “WHY?” and “are you sure that’s a good idea?”

She warned me and I’m grateful she navigated those rough waters before me so that I could be prepared.

At the end of the day, all I care about in this WHOLE WORLD is what’s best for my family and my boys….and that’s WHY!

So, ask me WHY we are moving to Kansas (go ahead, say it with disdain). Ask me why we bought a ranch. Why did we want the horses? Ask me…go ahead! I’ll tell you the same thing I will tell my boys because it’s the most important thing there is!

At the end of this life, family is all we have left. When I’m long gone from this world and all my boys have is each other, I doubt they will ever regret that they got to grow up close to their Brother Cousins or an Aunt who will spoil them rotten or an uncle who will be at all their baseball games or grandparents who will sit in the audience at EVERY school program with smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.

Very soon in our lives, we won’t be the only ones cheering our boys on.

Sure, Kansas doesn’t have mountains. You can’t ski many of it’s hills.

But you know what?

Colorado doesn’t have family.

But we do…and we are going back to them so our family can be together…

So there is your WHY!

And with that….it’s a crappy Snow Day here on our 3rd to Last Day in Colorado and I’m just fine with that. I get so sad whenever I look West to the mountains and it helps that I can’t see them through the snow. You know what does suck though? Snow Days when all of the toys are packed up and your kid is already “bored” at 8am. Oh, and the coffee pot is packed up and I’d pay someone $50 for a Starbucks delivery.

and…..Kirk is working from home (which should be great) except we have to tiptoe around and I have to fight with Reeve who wants to run downstairs every 5 minutes to show daddy something….

and….we have nothing to eat in this whole house except some tortillas, Cheerios, 2 eggs, 1 beer, shredded cheese, 4 hot dogs and a box of Teddy Grahams…

Dining Room

I can’t even with all the wallpaper in this house. I just can’t….

So, once it’s all removed (which is happening before we move in), I have to start reminding myself that what I actually have is a completely blank slate. The molding will be painted white and the window mullions (thanks, Erin, for teaching me that word) will be black-ish.

Picture a new light and once we remodel the kitchen, the wall below with the wreathe and 2 black things on it will be knocked out to open it into the kitchen.IMG_0011

Look at these floors! Aren’t they gorgeous? I keep reminding myself to look DOWN because if I look UP I always just see wallpaper….and flowers….two things I am not a fan of.IMG_0017

We have this Basque Java Table from Crate & Barrel we could put in there.

or this table from Restoration Hardware we could use.

and 8 of these Willoughby chairs from West Elm in gray….

I honestly don’t even know what to do. Two colors, one on top and another on bottom? Same colors? Dark? Light?

Chair Rails confuse me.

What are your thoughts for this room?

I’m torn between light & creamy like my dear friend JoJo from Fixer Upper would do like below.

or something like this taking advantage of the Chair Rails.

what would you do? Keeping in my mind I will most likely use the more formal of the two tables (the dark one)…..thoughts?

I am open to any suggestions/ideas y’all have. Flood me with your ideas.

I’m In Love

Folks, I don’t know how it managed to happen, but I’ve fallen in love with a sink. You read that right. I am in love with the Brockway Wash Sink and it’s downright a sin!

Sometimes, you know, I just feel downright sorry for my poor husband. I just can’t help it when I see something I want b/c I HAVE TO HAVE IT and this sink is a perfect example.

I also feel sorry for him b/c I obsess over things like sinks…and paint colors…and Moscow Mule Mugs (that’s a good story).

Here is the Powder Room in our new house.

Powder Room

it hurts!  It hurts my eyes!  That wallpaper. The brown toilet lid. The brass fixtures. The wicker shelf. The wreathe….

The painter is taking the wallpaper down to paint (Praise God) and we will replace the toilet, but let’s talk about the sink I would like to put in there.

Are you ready?

Ladies & Gentlemen, let me introduce you to the Kohler Brockway Wash Sink!

Kohler Brockway Sink

Now, mind you, I don’t know that there is room on the wall where the sink is for this sink yet, but if there is….Kirk, we need to find this sink and let it become the 5th member of our family. Brockway SInk Brockway Sink

and my personal favorite color combo, white with turquoise!Sink Heaven

what do you think of the sink? My mom said there is nowhere to put anything, but the powder room is so big you could put tables and baskets galore.

Just, first, let’s start by giving 1995 all of it’s flowers and wicker back, okay?

The North Bedroom (Reeve)

To say that I am slightly obsessed with making Reeve’s room perfect would possibly be an understatement. In my mind, this transition from living on a cul de sac with over 20 kids to a Ranch with no neighbors will go much smoother if his room is everything he wants…and more!

When I ask him what he wants, all he says at this point is that he wants it black!

Probably not gonna happen.

His room now is dark blue, almost navy, and I’d love to do something similar just to make it feel like the room he already has and because the dark walls help darken his room at night, but I’m kind of over it.

His new room is pretty dang cool! It has vaulted ceilings and is very long. There is a large walk in closet with built-in organizers. It has a space where we are going to add a floating desk. His Brimnes Ikea Bed & Headboard fits perfectly under one wall.

It has a Hidey Hole. A Batcave…a “not-so-secret room”

Reeve's Bedroom

I know…MORE wallpaper. I can’t even….but see that brown door? It has a room about 10 feet square that will hold all of his Batman toys. Out of sigh. Away. No one else can see them

He is so excited about this….

Okay, so, his headboard and bedframe are white and will butt up against that same wall. Here is my question?

Paint it black or funky navy blue? Or do I leave it gray-ish and paint that tall wall with the door on it black/blue? I am hoping to put the Mini Batman Decals in the composite below on that wall.

Remember, we are doing a Batman-inspired room…..

Boys Bedroom 1

The other end of his room (upper right picture) will hold some of the white Ikea Kallax Storage Units (see the white unit on bottom left picture).

I’ve also ordered a few of these prints from MiniLearners on Etsy and will hang them too. They are so cute, like $6 and will fit perfectly in some of the Ikea frames I am not using right now.

Boys Will Be BOysSo what are your thoughts? I can’t do an all-white/gray room and really want to add a few splashes or black or dark blue like in the background of the composite I’ve created.

I’d love to hear your ideas.

Friday Favorites (beauty)

So, I not only haven’t worn makeup in well over a week, it’s now Thursday as I write this and my hair has not been washed since I had it cut Saturday. Gross!  Whatever….I’ve bathed every day, I just haven’t washed my hair and am sporting lots of bang-braids and ponytails. As far as makeup, I don’t see anyone ever so why bother anymore?

*side note…yesterday I put a clean shirt on and it had a giant dried booger from Lowe on the chest….BOY MOM! GROSS!!!

So, since makeup is a luxury, my Beauty Favorites tend to be more about skincare or quick fixes I can use to hide problems. Here are some of the things I *found* in my stocking yesterday. Actually, Kirk found them hidden in a black and white striped Sephora bag in the back of my SUV and said “what’s all this?” and I said, “don’t worry about it.” 🙂

Friday Favorites (Beauty)

Friday Favorites (Beauty)

1. Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Moist Conditioner $3.99 Okay, so I have this really annoying (or smart depending on who you ask) habit of picking one of these up every time I am at Target. I can usually find them 2 for $5.00 so it’s a no-brainer. It’s really dry here in CO and this seems to be the only conditioner I can find that is creamy and leaves my hair soft. I’ve tried their regular conditioner and even it can’t compete with this treatment. It’s super thick and smells great. At any given moment I have 4 or 5 under my sink. I don’t wash my hair but ever 4 or 5 days so a bottle lasts me a month. I’m more than addicted to this stuff.

2. SEPHORA COLLECTION MicroSmooth Baked Sculpting Contour Trio $21.00 The picture does this no justice…the colors are so soft and pretty. I try to always wear a little blush and love this highlighter to give my cheeks a little sparkle without being all Teenage Girl Sparkly.

3. Beauty Counter Lip Sheer $28 I NEVER wear lipstick., but this Lip Sheer is more like a moisturizer to me in that it’s smooth and lasts a really long time. I like it b/c the color is soft and it’s really just SO moisturizing (like a chapstick) and not matte at all. Plus, all of Beauty Counter’s products are Safe and contain ingredients that are committed to a much higher quality of standards than any other on the market in the U.S.

4. Dollar Shave Club Razor $7/month I bought this monthly subscription for Kirk in his stocking last year and quickly stole the $7 blade once I upgraded him to the $9 blade. A $7 razor is good enough for these legs. Who am I kidding, they only get shaved once a week or so and this baby does a fantastic job! But Seriously….the blade has lasted months and I love it.

5. Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil $23 I love this eyebrow pencil b/c the tip is really thin and looks very natural when you use it. It comes with a brush on one end and every time I go into a makeup store for a pencil, I always walk out with this one. My eyebrows are really light blonde naturally and even more so in the summer when I’ve been out in the sun and their colors always are just perfect for me.

6. Zents FRESH eau de toilette $56 Sigh…..this one is a HUGE love of mine. I rarely use perfume, but if I’m daring to put anything other than yoga pants on, I also make sure to spritz some of this on. It’s so light and fresh! It honest to God just smells like the best clean laundry you’ve ever smelled. “Sparked by the fusion of healing and art, ZENTS scents become potent potions as they react with your body’s natural chemistry.” I have seen it in Anthropologie but found my first bottle in the cutest little boutique in Denver and fell in love!

7. Purest Palm Body Brush $9.99 I started using a Dry Brush after Lowe was born. I quickly lost all of my baby weight, but my skin on my stomach wasn’t shrinking. I know, I know…it takes 9 months to make it and lose it and yada yada…I read that dry brushing increased circulation and helped with skin shrinkage went out and bought one. I watched several tutorials on the proper way to use it (circular motion always towards you heart) and now use it every other bath. It feels so good and exfoliates wonderfully! If you don’t have one, RUN to the store and get it now.

8. Rosebud Lip Salve $6.00 I’ve been using this since college when I bought my first little tin at Urban Outfitters. It smells wonderfully and is so inexpensive I never feel guilty when I go through a tin in a month or so. I also love to use it as a cuticle softener. I’ve been known to use this as one of my Favorites any time I have a gift exchange.

9. Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel $9 I picked this up at the Vitamin Cottage when Lowe was pretty little b/c I liked the bottle. Good reason to buy something, huh? But I quickly discovered it is THE best makeup remover. I would use my regular makeup remover and be pretty happy and then put some of this on a cotton ball and see dirt!  DIRT!!!  Actual Dirt!  The bottle last forever and it smells so good. Every time I use it I feel like my skin just glows!

10. Naked Eye Shadow Pallete $29 When I do wear eyeshadow, I really love this palette!  The pinks, mauves and golds are my favorites!  The brush alone is worth $29. I will tell you my little secret too!  I bought this palette from one of my Mom Co-Ops for only $8 and have 4 more ordered and on the way. I can’t stop watching YouTube videos of 20-somethings who put this stuff on. They layer and cake it on and I’m amazed by what they can do with it, but that’s not for me. Nope. I like it b/c the roses, mauves and golds are perfect for my blue eyes whether I wear one color or three.

So, that’s it. I hope you find at least one of these helpful and are able to share some of your favorite Beauty Products with me!

“Her favorite color is blue. She says that blue is associated with vastness; the skies are blue, the oceans are blue.”
-Mahbod Seraji

If it were up to me, every room in my house would be some shade of blue.

BLUE is my color!

Aqua. Turquoise. Lapis. Sky. Aegean. Admiral.

Blue just is calming and cool! If you look at my color-organized closet, you would see the blue section is the largest. My jewelry is mostly blue. My socks are blue. I always buy blue tennis shoes.

While browsing Pinterest one night, I found my newest Blue Obsession that will make an appearance in the boys’ bathroom.

Here if your before (YIKES…that wallpaper) (that mirror)….gold shower doors….the sink has FISH around the rim!!!!!

Boys Bathroom Before

It’s hard to tell, but because of the shape of the second story of this house, the ceiling is vaulted and off to the left of the blue vanity (also getting replaced) is a gorgeous window looking out into the horse pasture.

We are having all the wallpaper stripped, getting a new mirror, faucet, fixtures and removing the gold shower door!  I love the two cabinets and am excited about only one sink versus the two we currently have now. It’s kind of worthless to have two sinks for the boys. The cabinet closest to us (with the box on it) will also get this makeover…

Are you ready? Because I am….and so far, this is only the 2nd room out of 20 that I’ve picked a color for….

Cyberspace by Sherwin Williams

I am painting the cabinets in the boys room BLUE!  The top cabinet is Cyberspace by Sherwin Williams and the one below is Hudson Bay by Benjamin Moore.

Hudson Bay by Benjamin Moore

I tend to like the top color better with the bottom mirror and black accessories.

Want to know another fun thing about the boys’ room?

I am so grossed out by this that I had a hard time even typing that.

Reeve hits the toilet, oh, about 1 out of every 4 pees and the thought of pee on carpet quite literally makes me want to puke.  So….for my first DIY (and let’s face it, I’m not much of a DIY’er….I’d rather make Kirk pay to have someone do the work), I am going to tile that floor myself!

What do you think about blue cabinets? Would you ever paint perfectly good, but boring, oak cabinets a fun color? Do you have carpet in your bathroom (Gag)?

Over Thinking

It’s one of those gorgeous, blue sky days in Colorado. The mountains are RIGHT THERE and no one even has a coat on although there is snow on the ground.

Today….well, today, I’m sad.

and today hurts. I can’t explain it really, it just feels so BIG, what we are doing.

I can’t imagine a life where I don’t wake up and see the mountains; something that is SO big and reminds me how small I really am in all of this.

People keep asking me “when are you moving?” and today someone asked when Reeve’s last day of school is and I started bawling. I’m sure I’m overthinking all of this, but I’m also just plain damn sad!

I’m going to miss those mountains. And hiking. I keep thinking about all our family hikes when Reeve was little and he’d stop strangers to ask them if they’d seen any clues or bad guys and I literally get sick to my stomach at not having that in our lives anymore.

I keep having what I can only describe as Panic Attacks. My heart starts racing, everything gets really loud, I start sweating and I am completely unable to make any sort of decision. Something as simple as turning left or right seems like it’s going to make or break my whole life. I’ve been working out a LOT lately and that seems to help, but today those damn white-peaked mountains and that bright blue sky have me wanting to crawl under the covers and sleep.

This image below perfectly describes what I’m feeling and I hate that it’s titled “Overthinking” b/c all I’m really doing is just feeling. Processing. Trying to make sure I haven’t made the hugest mistake of my life. Our lives.

I won’t lie when I tell you that the thought of that 10 hour drive will be the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I won’t be able to talk to my dad who is helping me drive back. I’m going to cry the whole way and if I even think about looking in the rearview it’s over. I DREAD IT with every ounce of my being.

Off to change a poopy diaper now and bargain with Reeve to take his nap so I can try to quit thinking at a 9 Incline at 4 mph on that treadmill while I watch “Making a Murderer“… could always be worse.

Why are barns red?

A sorority sister saw this sign and thought of me.

Never thought anyone would see a sign about red barns and think of ME, but I guess that’s where my life is going these days. 🙂

Why are barns red?

Did I tell you about the time I thought it would be funny to buy Kirk a pair of Carhartt overalls for Christmas and walked into Murdoch’s (which is like a Farm store?…) and had a panic attack.

God, I hope that’s not what people think when we tell them we bought a Ranch in Kansas. It doesn’t smell like a farm or feed or hay or whatever that smell was and our horses are just big, pretty pets we intend to stare at from the front porch with a drink in our hands.

Needless to say, these ponies are NOT my responsibility…I’m over here nursing a baby around the clock, wiping a 4-year-olds butt and obsessing over Fixer Upper.

On a random note, Kirk if you are reading this (and I know you are b/c I saw that you Follow this blog) my 8-year-old rain boots tore today and I think these would make a really great Valentine’s Day gift….I promise to help you out in that Red Barn if you buy me these Red Boots.

Hunter Red Boots

I’d Rather…

You know that game “I’d Rather” where you have to pick between the lesser of two evils?

Like, I’d rather “be a nerd or be a jock?

Or, I’d rather “swim in a pool or poop or get my head stuck in an elephant’s rear?”

Well, in my world, the game goes like this.

I’d rather “pick 10 or so paint colors for a house or eat boogers.”

I don’t want to do either, but I have to pick one.

At this point, I’m feasting on boogies… is SERIOUSLY so hard to pick paint colors. Even with the help of an Interior Decorator, I’m struggling so bad. I want the color to speak to me. To reflect the right mood. To match the furniture we have and the flooring already in the house and I wan’t it to be perfect.

Especially at the tune of a number that has a 3 in it followed by a BUNCH of zeroes……

So, this is where I need your help.

It may make most sense for me to focus on one room at a time at this point and just go with it.

Let’s start with the Sunroom.

This is a room off of the Living Room that is on the back of the house. Kirk LOVES this room. I hate it. There is a LOT of wood in this room. What is it about men and wood?

another view

Sunroom 2

Once all of their furniture and knick knacks are gone, we will put in our new outdoor couch set and an outdoor rug on the floor and most likely use this room for some drinking and chilling….music-listening even.

Taking notice that the flooring is a cream-ish tile, which would you do?

White Wash, which would still leave the knotty look of the pine?

White Wash

ShipLap ~ Or painted white with none of the knots of the pine showing

ShipLap Sunroom

Or paint it a Gray-Blue. The stain of the flooring in the picture below is very similar to the stain we have which is right next to this room.

Sunroom ~ Tranquility

So which do you like? Please comment on the Blog versus on Facebook.

I can’t wait to hear what you think….I definitely have a favorite and Kirk would prefer to leave it the way it is, but that room sort of makes me feel clausterphobic. I can’t imagine myself out there with a Vodka on the Rocks as it is now unless there is also a moose head hanging somewhere.

PS…see that really cool old phone hanging on the wall? I asked the Owner’s about it and they are LETTING ME KEEP IT!

Apparently, it was his dad’s dad’s phone and they made me promise if I ever don’t want it I will donate it to a museum. They said their children don’t like antiques and they knew as soon as I asked about it that it was meant to stay.

I LOVE this couple we are buying from! The items in their home mean so much to them and they’d rather pass them on than just donate or leave to someone who doesn’t want them! I will likely keep it in the exact same spot and think about them every time I look at it.
